Classical Hybrid School / Co-Op in the Works at Faith

May 4, 2023 by Pastor Hendrix Leave a Comment

For the past three-quarters of a year, a committee has been hard at work exploring the idea of opening a classical school at Faith. To this point, the committee has settled on the idea of a “Hybrid School.” For a great overview of what a Hybrid School is, as well as the “Hybrid School revolution,” listen to this podcast.

Ideally we will be recommending to the Voters Assembly of Faith that a teacher be called eventually, on at least a part-time base to manage curriculum and to teach. We’ve been the grateful recipients of some generous gifts already, including from another ELS congregation, but to make sure we have enough to sustain a teacher, we will need more start-up funds. Consider being a donor or patron for this school!

In the near-term, we will be operating as a Co-Op this coming Fall (2023) with a young grammar-age cohort. We’ll meet at Faith two days a week, begin with Matins (morning prayer service), Pastor will teach religion and a language (beginning Latin or Greek), and parents will fill-in other areas of study in the quadrivium.

A fuller overview of our goals and timeline is available in our Prospectus.

If you’d like more information about joining this Fall, or if you have thoughts or comments on the idea of a Co-Op, Classical School, Hybrid School, curriculum, etc., please contact Pastor Hendrix!

Family Altar Conference

April 25, 2023 by Pastor Hendrix Leave a Comment

Faith Lutheran Church is excited to again partner with Return to Wittenberg to host a family workshop on May 20.

This will be an encouraging workshop helping families of all types, sizes (even singles!) orient their life around the most important things. Learn how a few simple and fundamental things can lift burdens, lift minds, and lift hearts.

Dr. Arthur Eggert, author of “The Lutheran Family Altar,” will be a keynote presenter at the conference!
Other speakers will be announced soon.

After attending this conference, you will . . .

  • Have a greater understanding of the vocational responsibilities inherent in the Fourth Commandment.
  • Learn how the Lutheran concept of the “Family Altar” is central to a holistic Christian life.
  • Recognize the Catechism as more than a tool for confirmation class–it is a blueprint of cosmic reality.
  • Identify the Christian life as a cycle of oratio, meditatio, tentatio with meaningful connection to catechesis and education.
  • Have a greater appreciation of the ways that classical education closely conforms with Christian reality.

The Christian family is a microcosm of God’s benevolent will for the order of the cosmos. All legitimate power in the Church and in the State is derived from God’s created order for humanity, which is contained in the fourth commandment and cosmically perfected in Christ and His Church. In short, the Family Altar is at the crossroads of reality, encompassing the spiritual and physical realms. The Family Altar is the way that Christians in their every-day lives sanctify themselves and their worlds with prayer (oratio) and the Word of God (meditatio) in the face of the struggles and discipline (tentatio) of their daily lives.

In addition to theoretical concepts, the workshop will provide practical examples and resources for the Family Altar. Practical tips will be offered for how to pray the Divine Office as a family and incorporating children into both corporate and private worship.

Additional topics on classical education and liberal arts will be offered. Faith Lutheran Church is in the process of opening a new hybrid classical school here in Oregon: Sursum Corda Classical School, with the express purpose to allow children to “lift up their hearts.”

South-Madison Area Easter Vigil 2023

April 4, 2023 by Pastor Hendrix Leave a Comment

SOUTH-MADISON AREA ELS/WELS JOINT EASTER VIGIL

Join Faith, Resurrection, and Western Koshkonong Lutheran Churches for our annual joint Easter Vigil Service. This year’s service in our yearly rotation will take place at the historic Western Koshkonong Lutheran Church.

The Easter Vigil is an ancient (c. 350 A.D.) tradition that connects our Baptism to Jesus’ Resurrection. The service, which is unlike any other in the church, begins outside with a fire. Believers then process into the darkened sanctuary with candles, as the lights are gradually illumined, when finally the feast of the Lamb, the Lord’s Supper, is celebrated and the Alleluias are sung! Join us as we await the dawn of Easter together!

When: Holy Saturday April 8, 2023.  Service begins at sunset: 7:32pm.

Where: Western Koshkonong Lutheran Church, 2633 Church Street Cottage Grove, WI 53527 (between Stoughton and Cottage Grove)

Easter at Faith

March 27, 2023 by Pastor Hendrix Leave a Comment

Join us for our Easter worship services in Oregon, WI. We celebrate the historic (nearly 2000-year-old) tradition of the Paschal Triduum.

Paschal = The Biblical word for “Easter”
Triduum = “The Three Days.”

After 40 Days of Lent, the Christian Year has now reached its climax. We have come to the celebration of the suffering, death, and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. This is the celebration for which we have been preparing throughout Lent. Now we see what our Savior came to do. We see Him suffer and die for our sins and for the sins of the world. And we see Him rise triumphantly on Easter morning to assure us that our salvation is complete, the victory is won.

The three services over these three days begin on Maundy Thursday. All three services are dramatic each in their own way and intimately connected to each other. The focus as always, is Christ.

Maundy Thursday | 6:30pm – Divine Service. After celebrating the Lord’s Supper, the altar is stripped of its vestments and appointments, recalling the Lord’s abandonment in the Garden of Gethsemane.

Good Friday | 6:30pm – Tenebrae Service. A solemn service of adoration of Jesus the Lamb of God as He offers up his life. Throughout the service the Passion Account from John’s Gospel is read as candles are extinguished.

Holy Saturday | Sundown (7:32pm) – Easter Vigil Service at Western Koshkonong Lutheran Church
A joint service, this year at Western Koshkonong Lutheran Church, 2633 Church Street Cottage Grove, WI 53527.

The Easter Alleluia sounds forth for the first time in the midst of the dark night and we are carried in spirit to Christ’s tomb where the Creator’s Sabbath rest was transformed into a new Day and Age, the Day of the Lord.

Easter Sunday | 9:00am – Easter Festival Divine Service.  Fellowship breakfast at 7:45am.
Family Easter Egg hunt following the service (approx. 10:15am)

With Easter, Christ fulfills the Old Testament Passover, proving God’s anger has passed over us because of His sacrificial death as the Lamb of God.  For this reason, it is most fitting to celebrate with the feast that Christ Himself instituted to commemorate His death and resurrection until He comes (1 Cor. 11:26): Holy Communion.
